How to Build a Thriving Online School?

Blog Jul 08, 2020

There are three components to building a thriving online learning community:

1) Learning Management System

2) Community

3) Calendar

Let's dive into each one in more detail...

Learning Management System (LMS)

At the core of any online school is quite intuitively the education. Any online school differs from an offline school in that education is delivered in a virtual setting rather than an in-person one; however, the curriculum can stay largely the same.

One of the first systems that you'll want to set up when building your online school is a place to house your course material and content.

You can use a host of different existing LMSs to act as the home for your school's content. Even something as simple as Google Drive or Dropbox can work here.

Community

Rest assured, while students may originally come for the content, they'll stay for the community.

Community is the most powerful engagement tool in any type of learning setting. To demonstrate this, just think what would happen if you arrived at college and you were handed a textbook, asked to learn the entirety of the material, and take a final exam at the end of the semester.

How well would you do on the exam? How likely would you be to finish college?

The reason that a large percentage of students actually finish offline schools/college is because accountability is baked into the experience through community.

You attend lectures, labs, office hours, etc.. with peers who are in the same stage of learning as you are.

While, undoubtedly, the course content and lectures will be a huge part of the education journey, students will learn just as much from peer-to-peer interactions.

Calendar

The last component to building a thriving online school is the calendar. This is, particularly, important in an online setting as students have even less transparency in regards to where they should be and when they should be there.

For this reason, it's incredibly important to have a centralized place that students can reference to see all upcoming sessions and access the proper conferencing links.

For most use cases, Google Calendar will suffice.
